Dirt, Sand & Water. Yes Please!!!
Dirt & sand on my feet... yes pleaaaase!
Growing up with a big yard, I remember loving the feeling of walking around barefoot. Sure, it sometimes resulted in some unpleasant surprises. But, most of the time, I felt directly connected to the earth. Connected to the simple life - being free.
For a few years, I was fortunate enough to live in a house that had a pretty river in the backyard. My room had a balcony where I spent so many days and nights dreaming, drawing, writing poetry. It was true paradise.
Living in the city has never felt ''real'' to me. It's not where I feel at peace. It's not where I feel comfortable.
I remember the moment the above picture was taken. Stephane and I were invited to a family member's family cottage. As soon as we woke up that morning, we had a lovely (delicious) breakfast and spent the rest of the morning having fun in the lake. We all jumped off the dock a few times (including two amazingly lovable golden labs). Then, as a soon as I spotted this hammock between the trees, I decided to rest a little and to take it all in. I felt at home - surrounded by nature.
Loved every second of that weekend. Every single second.
Winter has me dreaming about summer. But, summer definitely doesn't have me dreaming about winter. Get it? I'm a summer time gal. No doubt about it!
Can't wait to get those feet dirty again. Summer, I long for you.

Moving/ Packing Tips
(March 2015)
Last March, I moved all of the remaining items I had into our apartment and storage. It was the first time in about 8 years since I had to move so much stuff. Let me tell ya, I never realized how much stuff I had accumulated in those 8 years until I had to put them all in boxes. Thankfully, I'm not one to get emotionally attached to items. So, at least 40%-50% of my stuff ended up being donated or sold on Kijiji. To be honest, thinking about how much stuff I still have, I regret not donating even more items. Once we move into the house, I will most likely be doing another round of donation. But - hey - that's for another day.
I've gathered some tips and tricks from moving which I thought I would share with you. Feel free to use these tips as you wish.
1. Donate. Donate. Donate.
There are so many benefits to this. Remember, as human beings, we actually need very little to survive. Material objects will not make you happy. Before starting to pack, look around each room, each closet. If you haven't worn or touched any items in over 1 year, chances are it's only collecting dust where you are currently living and will keep doing the same in your new place. Plus, you might just be happily surprised at how good it will make you feel to get rid of ALL that junk around you. I'm a strong believer that living with minimal material objects equals a happier-less stressed out you. Give it a try!
2. Gather all necessary supplies.
Preparation is key. Sure there will be things you most likely will only think of once you start packing but gathering the necessary supplies will avoid you going back and forth from the store and focus most of your time on packing. Here's a list of necessary supplies I like to use to move:
- Boxes (either carton boxes or plastic containers)
- Permanent markers (I only use them to write on carton boxes)
- Labels (some marked ahead of time and some unmarked)
- Sturdy tape
- Pen and paper
- Either a camera or a phone that has a good camera quality. (When I want to make sure I will remember something in a specific order, I take a picture of it to help me remember).
3. If it's not in the season, pack it first.
We, here in Canada, have four seasons. If you're moving in January, chances are you won't need your summer clothes for another couple of months (unless you're planning to go on a trip somewhere of course). If you're moving in June, chances are you won't need your winter clothes for another couple of months. Get the picture? Since you know you won't need these items for a while, pack them first! It will clear up some space and help get you started.
4. Put a label on it.
As soon as you're done packing a box, put a label on it. If you have multiple categories of items within the same box, don't be shy - write it down. This will save you the headache of having to search through a whole box just to find out what you're looking for is in fact in a completely different box. You're welcome.
5. If you can, keep things intact.
Not everybody will agree with this one. But, if you're like me and don't like to pack/ unpack forever, keep things intact where you can. For instance, if you have a dresser, simply take out each drawer to help with the move but keep all the clothes inside the drawer. This will allow for a quick unpack.
6. Pack things in categories.
Do not mix room items together. If you're packing items in the washroom and you notice there is still space in the box, do not put your bedroom items or items from another room in the same box. Once you move in, and start to unpack, you will be thankful to know that when you have no more boxes that are labelled ''washroom'' for instance, it will mean there are no more items to put into the new washroom. Things will feel a lot more accomplished a lot faster.
7. Pack yourself a suitcase.
Even though you're not technically going on a trip, you are moving and packing. Chances are, you won't have the energy to unpack every single item the first few days. So, do yourself a favor and pack a suitcase as if you were going on a trip (i.e. clothes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc.). If you're moving in the midst of working, figure out ahead of time a few outside you would wear to the office prior to packing. Again, you're welcome.
8. If you can, pre-clean the new kitchen and bathroom.
Chances are you won't want to order take out the whole time you're moving/ unpacking. Other than being unhealthy, it won't give you much energy to do all you need to do. If you can, before unpacking anything into the new place, pre-clean the kitchen and bathroom. Having your kitchen clean and unpacked first will help you feel at home faster and will help you feel more organized. And the bathroom, well, let's just say it's for obvious hygienic reasons.
9. If it's complicated to dissemble, take a picture BEFORE.
Unless you like puzzles, I recommend taking pictures of complicated things to dissemble BEFORE doing it. Therefore, once you move, it will be easier to assemble. SUCH a time saver!
10. Address change.
Last but definitely not least, remember to switch your address. I never realized how many phone calls or emails I had to send to do this. To help you out, I made a quick checklist of people you most likely will have to contact to mention your address has changes:
- Driver's licence (if your address is on your driver's licence, it will need to be changed. This may take a few weeks so I recommend doing it sooner than later... perhaps 3-4 weeks ahead of time).
- Bank
- Employer
- Vehicle registration
- Bills
- Car insurance
- School
- Childcare
- Doctor
- Dentist
- Vet
- Gym
- Family & friends
Hope this helps you one way or another. I tend to feel all sorts feels whenever a big change (like a move) is coming close. So, making lists definitely helps me see and think a lot clearer.
Now... more packing :-)

Less than a Month!!!!!
We're finally here! Well, not quite yet because we haven't moved into the house yet. But, given that we have less than a month to go - it almost feels too good to be true. Since last April, we have been looking forward to this time.
People keep asking me whether or not I felt like the time passed by really slowly. The answer is - just like anything you're really looking forward to - Yes! But, it wasn't all that bad. As mentioned above, we had signed the papers for the house in April 2015. Soon after, summer came around and we spent most of our time outside or on the road. It was a lot easier to cope with living in a (really really) small living space when most of our time was spent outside of the apartment. In the Fall, both Stephane and I were working two jobs which meant on top of not seeing each other often (boohoo), we were also pretty busy working. Again, most of our time was spent outside of the apartment. It became a lot harder when I went back to working one job (my second job was only seasonal) and the cold weather arrived along with shorter sunny days. Our apartment is located near an open field. So, Mimi and I spent lots of evenings walking/ running/ playing around. But, as soon as the weather became much colder, I knew it was time for Mimi and I to start hibernating. After all, she may be feisty but she is pretty small.
The Apartment
I haven't shared ANY pictures of the apartment ever since the beginning. And quite frankly, only a handful of people has seen the inside of the building. If I may be completely honest, the main reason why is - shame -. I'm not ashamed of living in a small apartment. I actually find there are many benefits from living in a small space one of which is it's a huge money saver. But, given that I knew living in that apartment was only going to be temporary, I didn't put much effort into making it 'cozy'. There are far too much stuff lying around. We've actually had to make a path on the floor to allow us to move from the entrance to the kitchen. All of our coats are lying on a huge pile on the floor instead of being hung up on the wall or in the closet (no more space in the closet). Around all of our stuff are piles and piles of boxes and containers ready for when we move. Did I mention that we live in a one bedroom apartment which Junior uses as his bedroom and we sleep in the living room? Maybe one day I will share pictures of our apartment. But, for now, I don't care to remember this place in the future.
Location
I cannot wait to walk around in a neighborhood where I feel safe in. I've stopped counting the amount of times I've seen people inject themselves with drugs, hire prostitutes, hearing reports of people shot or stabbed just a few streets away, etc. Not cool. Not cool at all.
The area where we are moving in is the complete opposite of where the apartment is. It's very family oriented which means lots of schools, parks, playgrounds and people around our age.
House
Dear house, you will be appreciated to the FULLEST.
I can't wait to:
- invite people over
- cook in my kitchen
- sit on a couch (instead of always sitting on our bed to eat or watch TV, etc)
- be able to do laundry in our own house without having to always carry huge loads of laundry elsewhere
- be able to feel at home (haven't felt that ever since moving into the apartment)
- meet our neighbors
- decorate!!!! :-)
Can't wait to show you guys our new casa!!!

Colors of the Year 2016
''Also, in the recent years due to a necessity of cancelling psychological labeling and standardization, a desire that urges us to see the world as a whole and not as a process of individual occurred. The trend is that pink and blue to no longer automatically be associated with masculine and feminine; thus this combination of the two.'' - Source here
While I'm not one to follow trends whether it be fashion or decorations, I still like to know what's ''in'' in order to inspire my own sense of style and to give myself ideas.
Every year, Pantone comes up with a board of color trends for the following year. This is based on years and years of market research and trends.
Many people like to base their artistic choices based on the new color trends Pantone gives out every year. For instance, mood boards for weddings usually covers a few if not all of the colors of the year.
Now it's one thing knowing the colors of the year, but, knowing how to incorporate them into a decor without it looking too overwhelming --- that's a different story.
Here's a few inspiration I found on the Web...
This image includes mostly Rose Quartz and Lilac Gray colors. They really go beautifully together. Adding that pop of copper really suits the overall feel of the room. If you don't like the copper and you want to add a little bit more pop of color, Snorkel Blue would add that touch of drama while Peach Echo would make it feel more vibrant.
If you're not ready to commit to painting your walls using one of the colors from the 2016 palette, adding a touch of it with accessories may be your best bet. In the image above, the curtains adds that settle yet visible touch of Rose Quartz. It creates more of a classic-romantic feel.
Images source: here
Now my personal favorite, the Shabby Chic style. Shabby Chic means calm, romantic, relaxation and reconciliation. For years, it has incorporated the pink and blue tones. Don't they just go so well together? When you mix them both with various shades of white or various shades of wood - you then get that country feel that I JUST LOVE.
Regardless of which colors your choose to decorate, I strongly recommend doing some research beforehand. Colors can evoke various parts of your brain and soul that can trigger different emotions. For instance, for bedroom colors, I always recommend using colors that makes you feel calm and relaxed. You will be surprised at how much it can help you have a good night sleep.
Do your research. See what you like and what you dislike. Think of one main color you would like to use then use other colors that compliments that main color to help give a room a sense of continuity and that is pleasant for the eye.
Looking forward to adding my own little touch of styles to our house. YAY! Can't wait!
Thanks for reading.

Cheers to a New Year
Xmas party at work. Holidays 2015.
Well, would you look at that - 2016 -.
Still getting used to the sound of it but that happens every year. Next thing you know, it will feel like we have been living in 2016 forever... ok maybe not but you know what I mean.
Last year, I remember thinking ''2016 is going to be a BIG year''. And it just feels surreal that it's here already. I mean, we're moving into our house NEXT month. Only 45 days and we will get to set foot in our house. THAT'S JUST PLAIN NUTS! But, when you're really looking forward to something, it doesn't seem so bad when time flies by.
BIG plans for 2016. BIG!
Our biggest plan is moving into the house. Broken record yet? But really! It seems like it's even more of a BIG plan because once you acquire a house - it's then time to turn it into a home. And that <-- can take months/ years to create.
We also have other plans that we just can't discuss just yet because it's not official OFFICIAL. But, lets just say I will have more than the new house as far as decorating opportunities. Wait, did I just say too much already? :-)
I'm not one to make resolutions in the New Year. I just don't believe in them. I believe you should basically live every day as if it was the New Year and just make the best of it ALL THE TIME.
Therefore, I will simply end this post by saying ''Cheers to another year!!''.

Dreaming of Christmas
Source: here
December has always had that magical touch in my heart. Aside from having my birthday at the beginning of the month, December has always been filled with magical lights and special family reunions. From as long as I can remember, we used to get dressed up real nice, get our hair and makeup done and drive up to go visit some family members. On each side of my family, I had aunts that have always went out of their ways to decorated Christmas as if we were truly at the North Pole. As a little kid, it really felt magical.
Even now as an adult, Christmas still holds a special place in my heart.
Unfortunately, we don't have much space in the apartment to put up a Christmas tree this year. (Imagine as mall space filled with boxes on top of boxes and a few other random things here and there - and there you have an idea of our apartment situation). I've been joking around saying I only have space to put up a car scent in the form of a tree. But hey - at least the apartment would smell extra good and it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to store afterwards. Haha!
All jokes aside, this doesn't stop me from dreaming about decorating our house with Christmas decorations next year. So, I thought I would share some inspiration with you.
Source: here
LIVING ROOM
By now, you've probably noticed that I love a house with a rustic feel. The country girl in me can't help it. Therefore, I would simply keep the Christmas decorations in the living room as simple as possible. By that, I mean keep the overall look filled with greens (Christmas tree) and perhaps add a few green garlands on top of the fireplace, maybe a bit of burlap.
Source: here
XMAS TREE
I love how full this xmas tree looks but still not overwhelmed with colors. I'm not usually known as being ''matchy-matchy'' but I do like to see well coordinated colors. In this case, the burlap and the green works magic together.
Source: here
WRAPPING
This is where I usually have the most fun but not much talent. Growing up, whenever I would wrap someone's gift - it would end up looking h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e. To the point where you couldn't even guess the shape of the gift because it was all over the place. And no, it wasn't on purpose. But, over the years, I have become more and more patient when it comes to wrapping and have appreciated taking the time to do a great job. In the image above, I love how they all look original yet simple.
Thanks for letting me share my xmas inspiration. Hopefully, next year, you will get to see the real deal and not just pictures I found on the net. :-)
Happy Monday!

Progress on the House
This morning, I had the opportunity to go visit the site of our future house. I met with a construction site supervisor who then showed me around the house as we talked about the progress.
It was the first time I saw the brick on the house. I personally REALLY like the look of bricks. The supervisor told me the siding will be white and beige. I'm not a big fan of beige but I have faith in them that they have thought about the aesthetics of the house prior to making that decision. Fingers crossed that it will look good.
Side note, the ground in front of the house was quite uneven while walking around. It will all be evened out prior to moving in. But it did remind me of a bumpy downhill skiing trail. Do I have winter on my mind much?
Standing in the Master Bedroom. Left of the picture will be our walk-in closet. On the right will be our washroom.
Standing in the third bedroom looking into Junior's bedroom.
Standing in Junior's bedroom looking into our bedroom. Top right is the third bedroom.
We started the tour by walking around upstairs. It felt a little surreal being able to see through the walls. For some reason, it made the rooms appear smaller than the ones in the model home. But, the supervisor assured me that it's a common comment among people and that it will all appear a little bigger once the rooms are finished.
Standing in the dinning area.
Standing in the kitchen area.
Standing in the living room looking into the kitchen area.
Next up - the main floor. Since the main floor has more of an open concept, it made it easier for me to visualize the settings. One thing I fell in love with in the model home was the staircase. There is something about the staircase that can add so much personality to a home. I once lived in a house that had a spiral staircase and I loved how it gave an open concept. This reminded me of that spiral staircase and I love how open it looks. Having a split staircase also allows for the home owner to save space as it's typically one on top of the other.
When we purchased the house, we were told that a fireplace was included in our home. I LOVE fireplaces. I love how it can center a room as well as adding that perfect touch of drama. I can easily picture a Christmas garland hanging up top the fireplace next year. Ahhhh, the dream!
Our kitchen was the hardest to visualize since it's still no where near complete. Don't get me wrong, I know nothing is currently completed in the house but there will be so many various things added that even the outlook of it ad the moment will look completely different. The site supervisor advised me that the kitchen will be completed the first week of January. He mentioned that if we were interested in seeing it prior to our move in date, we could give him a call for a visit. I think this may just happen :-)
Tah-dah! This is a little preview of what our house will look like in less than 3 months. I haven't shared any pictures of the basement on purpose. Quite frankly, it's just boring. Our basement will be unfinished and we're planning on simply letting it be for at least a few years.
We're pretty excited about the progress. It's amazing how everything goes by fairly fast once it gets going. Every week, something new is added to the house. Exciting!!!
Thanks for letting me share such a cool and exciting moment in our lives :-)

Junior's Bedroom - Inspiration (and before pictures)
LEGO THEME
This little boy LOVES Legos. When Steph was younger, he used to have TONS of Legos and would play around with them even when he was a teenager. Junior definitely inherited the Lego gene. Therefore, we've decided to make his room a Lego themed bedroom.LEGO ACCESSORIES
While I don't plan to go overboard with the theme, my goal is to have various Lego theme accessories throughout the room. For instance, he will be getting a (really nice!) Lego themed bedspread. I've also found these really cool Lego vinyl stickers as pictured above on Etsy (link here).

BEFORE PICTURES (from the model home)
Still not quite sure what to do with these closet doors. They aren't horrible but, for some reason, it reminds me of 1970's houses. Not my style. A project I will tackle down the line. Not a priority.
HIDING SPOT/ READING NOOK
I love that he will have a little reading nook (aka bay window). I've always wanted one as a child. I'm thinking of putting a whole bunch of pillows on the floor and put a row of curtains to divide it from the rest of the bedroom. Therefore, he could have his little hideaway spot in his own bedroom. Oh the days when I used to squeeze into my tiny closet to have my own little hiding spot. Memories! I'm also thinking about painting one of the walls with chalk paint so he could let his creativity fly whenever he wants.
LITTLE DETAILS
To balance the Lego theme, I also plan on adding various little details to the room like adding dinosaurs handles to a dresser. I'm also considering changing the ceiling lamp in his bedroom into something more fun. Any suggestions?
I think out of all of the rooms in the house, this might just be the one I'm MOST excited to decorate. Perhaps its because I feel like when it comes to kid's bedrooms, you can really let your creativity run loose. Can't wait! This will probably be one of the rooms I will start decorating first.

Happy Birthday!!!!
Spring 2015
Dear Ste,
You're the only man I know who wakes up in the morning by singing ''That Don't Impress Me Much'' by Shania Twain. Yes, that's you. You always find a way to make me laugh from very early in the morning until you kiss me good night.
You're the only man I know who plays with my hair to help me fall asleep even if your hand starts hurting. Yes that's you. You're always finding ways to do the ''little things'' just to make me feel extra special.
You're the only man I know who is so good with numbers, that your mind is constantly running from left to right. Yes, that's you. You're always keeping us in line and focused on our family goals.
You're the only man I know who plays Superman while sleepwalking. Yes, that's you. You're saving me even while you're sleeping. Ps: Always great stories to tell over dinner with family and friends hehe.
Thank you for being you, for always giving your everything to people you care about and for putting everybody's needs before your own.
2015 has been a great year. Can't wait to see what the future holds <3. Wouldn't want to do life with anyone else but you. Boyeeeee (inside joke).
Happy 30th birthday!!
You da best,
- Jessica

House Progress
One word: progress.
Another word: patience.
Its starting to look more and more like a house. Our house. (It still feels surreal saying that).
By this point, we're usually able to go check out the progress on our house about once every two weeks. Every time we go, it seems like its progressing relatively quickly. Given my lack of knowledge on construction, I'm always thinking Oh Great! It's Almost Done, Right!? Nope... still 3 months to go. Patience is not my strongest quality. -_-
By this point, here are the things we are MOST looking forward to:
- An actual bedroom.
Never knew I would miss having a door to my own bedroom so much. We are currently living in our living room/ dinning room.
- Having our own washing and drying machine.
The thought of not having to leave our house just to do our laundry seems incredible at this point.
- Having space to walk around in our own place.
When Stephane and I moved into our apartment, our plan was to save money on storage so we basically made huge piles of our stuff in various areas of our apartment. Thankfully, some family members have let us store some of our belongings in their basements but OH MY - you never realize how much stuff you've accumulated over the years before moving into a much MUCH smaller space.
- A working kitchen.
The kitchen in our apartment looks like it hasn't been renovated since 1928. Okay, perhaps slightly exaggerated but - you see what I mean here. It's old and everything looks like it's falling apart. The first time I tried cooking something on the stove, I almost lit the kitchen on fire since smoke was coming out of everywhere. It was also the last time I tried cooking something on that stove. No thanks!
I hope this doesn't sound like complaining because, even if we aren't currently living in an ideal living situation at the moment, we are feeling VERY grateful to be able to look forward to living in our own house within a few months. We just know we will appreciate it even more.
Now that Christmas is coming up (did I just say Christmas? Already?), it makes me even more excited to be able to decorate our house next year.

Inspire Me
Source: here
Wow. Just one look at this work of art and BAM! - Inspiration! I've always loved double exposure images but, this artist has this down to perfection. Hoping to get some similar artwork displayed somewhere in the new house. Perhaps my office?
Source: here
I often feel the need to inspire people. Why? Because I believe inspiration is best when shared with others. If somebody inspires me, I try to let that person know. When somebody tells me I've inspired them to do something good, it makes me feel like I've been transparent enough to let other people be able to see certain parts of me that inspired them. Does that make any sense? Many people inspire me. I only hope to inspire others just as well.
Source: here
Earlier this fall, I started wearing darker lipstick and got quite addicted to it. I only wear makeup whenever I got somewhere special. But I love how powerful a dark color can be whether it's makeup or clothing. And, that purple? Hello... YES!
I hope that by sharing what inspires me, it also inspires you somehow.
Have a great weekend!

Master bedroom - Inspiration (And Before Pictures)
To give you a sense of my style and inspiration for each room, I thought I would share some pictures that hopefully gives you an idea of where I'm heading in terms of style and decoration.
MASTER BEDROOM
I've had lots of fun coming up with ideas for the master bedroom given that even if it's not the main focus of the house, it's definitely an area of the house where we are going to spend almost half of our time. My first ideas were ALL white with various shades of blue (i.e. bedspread, etc.). I even thought about a nice bedspread with flowers but - that idea was quickly turned down when I shared it with Stephane.
GREY
Therefore, I switched my focus to various shades of greys. Greys are not gender specific yet they bring a sense of calm and relaxation. Also, greys being neutral, they provide plenty of opportunity for different pops of colors. I knew I wanted to have the ability to change a few colors in the bedroom depending on the season therefore - grey it is.
RUSTIC
I also loved the idea of waking up in the morning feeling like I've spent the night at a cottage. The wood wall really makes the difference in helping the room feel very rustic. I'm not quite sure how I will make it happen yet but I've already found plenty of cheap DIY options on Pinterest. Can't wait to see the outcome!
Wooden furniture? Love it! Why not re-purpose a wooden ladder into a mini book display. Although, I would probably use it to display some pictures frames and perhaps lay a few wooden sticks just for decoration purposes.
Given that our house will not actually be a cottage, I also don't want to over do it in terms of adding wood to every single piece of decoration. Therefore, I'm also thinking about mixing the wooden objects with metal objects. In the picture above, they used dark metal for their ceiling lamp, their bedside lamps as well as the curtain rod. I love how it adds balance to the overall texture of the room.
ACCESSORIES
ACCESSORIES
I'm also thinking about mix-matching various styles by adding various patterns such as polka-dots and/or tribal patterns. Adding lighter pillows to an otherwise darker bedroom would help counter-balance the overall feel to the bedroom.
I hope this helps you get a sense of the direction I'm going to take in terms of decoration each room of the house. It definitely helps me figuring it all out went it comes to writing down my thoughts and ideas on this blog.

Dinning Room Area - Inspiration (And Before Pictures)
FRENCH-RUSTIC DECOR
When you walk into the house, the first room you see is the dinning area. Given that it will be the main focus of the first floor, I've spent A LOT OF TIME thinking about the space.
BEFORE
(Picture of our ''model home'').DINNING AREA
Originally, I had intended to sell our dinning room table and simply buy a new one. You can see it here. But, after feeling so inspired by various wooden dinning room tables, I've decided to keep our current table in order to add to the overall rustic style of the house. I may paint it a different colors (maybe white or light blue) but I've decided to wait until we move into the house before making that decision.
DINNING CHAIRS
One thing I'm almost 100% sure (okay, maybe more like 99.9%), is that I want to paint my dinning chairs. Over the years, we've accumulated a total of 6 various wooden chairs that are just begging to be painted. Perhaps I should paint them all a different colors? I'm currently leaning towards painting half of them off-white, the other half baby-pink-beige. I may also change my mind completely... no surprises there.
DISPLAY
While I'm a big fan of variety, there is something I find quite appealing in the way these pictures are displayed. The simplicity of these picture frames is quite timeless yet very romantic. I'm thinking of displaying similar pictures frames on the wall just behind the dinning table.
Overall, my plan for this room is for the decorations to be simple, rustic and unique to make it welcoming for guests to feel comfortable as soon as they walk in the house. An overall french-rustic atmosphere.
